After reading the brief for Exercise 1.3 (1) Line, I began to look over the work mentioned in the reading around the exercise, a Mr Eugene Atget (1857-1972). Eugene was a pioneer of urban street photography in Paris at the turn of the last century. His photographs contain a strong sense of depth. As I looked through his images I remembered the work of a different photographer, who’s work I’d seen only a few days before, it contained many similarities to Atget.
His name is Fred Mortagne, he like Atget uses the urban jungle to capture depth and a sense of illusion. Based in Lyon his primary focus is the dynamism of his subjects on skateboards, using extravagant angles and lines. Fred also boasts an array of photos where he flattens the pictorial space using lines, creating an abstract composition.
